Dog Scout Troop 161 Member Group Class: Practice Dog Scout Test Skills
1pm Sundays, June 16, 23, and 30, 2019 (class is 3 consecutive weeks)
at Good Dog Rising
This is a three week class open only to active Dog Scout Troop members, and it is free for those members. Check out the Dog Scouts page on the Good Dog Rising website for details about membership.
We will go over exercises to build skills required for the Dog Scout Test - especially stay, indirect access/leave-it, and heeling skills. You'll learn plenty of great exercises you can use at home with no equipment and small spaces to build the foundation skills you'll need to be successful.
Please plan to attend all three weeks of class if you sign up, as exercises will build upon the previous week. Space is limited.
We may check of a few items of actual testing if time allows and dogs are ready, but these sessions are focused on covering the practice exercises so that you can use them to practice at time to prepare for testing. Bring plenty of high value treats, and leash/collar/harness that is passable on the Dog Scout Test (you can find this and other test requirements on
Sign up for this MiniSeries class the same way you'd sign up for any Good Dog Rising group class (it will just be a $0 fee class.) If you have just recently joined Dog Scouts, be sure to get your Troop Membership form and dues in right away so that we can ensure those signed up are active members (or bring these along to the June 8th TTouch event.)
Dog Scout Troop 161 Member Training Day: Learn and Try T-Touch
1-4pm, Saturday, June 8, 2019
at Good Dog Rising
Troop 161 volunteer Christy King will host a learning event for Troop 161 members to learn about and try TTouch. Details from Christy below:

Come learn about Tellington TTouch and how it can help you and your dog on Saturday, June 8th from 1 pm – 4 pm at Good Dog Rising.
Tellington TTouch is known for using circular touches to help release tension and to bring awareness to different areas of the body. TTouch can positively affect an animal’s behavior, performance, well-being, and the human’s relationship with the animal. TTouch also enhances the animal’s ability to learn. This is accomplished through four modalities: 1) TTouch - circles and lifts, 2) Playground for higher learning, 3) Ways to help the animal come into balance physically, emotionally and mentally, and 4) The intention and connection with the animal at a heart level.
On June 8th you will learn about TTouch, how to do various circles and lifts, and will have the opportunity to work in the playground for higher learning with your dog.
Pre-registration is *required* for this event. As space is limited, please register to let us know you’re coming (remember this is exclusively for Dog Scout Troop members).
If you're interested in becoming a troop member, there is info on the Good Dog Rising Dog Scouts page.

Dog Scout Troop 161 Member Gathering & Spring Dog Walk
11am Saturday, April 20, 2019
at Spring Meadows Park, 640 West 1st St, Boiling Springs, PA 17007

Troop 161 members will gather for a Saturday dog walk together at Spring Meadows Park in Boiling Springs. Nice paved/gravel walkway (in case of spring mud), mostly flat, options for shorter or longer distances anywhere from 0 to 3 miles. All troop members and their dogs are welcome!
Bring bunches of yummy treats if you'd like to work on good walking manners, or maybe a little informal Canine Parkour. Let's promote positive training with kind training equipment only, please (no shock, prong, or choke collars). And don't forget to be prepared for responsible clean-up with poop bags!
If you're interested in becoming a member, there is info on the Good Dog Rising Dog Scouts page.

Dog Scout Troop 161 Open House
7pm Friday, January 25, 2019
at Good Dog Rising

Join us for an open house event as we re-invigorate Dog Scout Troop 161, a local chapter of Dog Scouts of America we've hosted since 2007. We want to get more active again in 2019 because it's such an awesome mix of fun, learning, charitable good deeds, and promoting positive training. We invite current, past, and potential future members to join us.

Open to current and former members, as well as anyone interested in Dog Scouts. Bring a friend! Social dogs are very welcome, or plan to enjoy quality time with other "dog people." Dogs/people do not have to be GDR students. (Given that part of the Dog Scouts mission is to promote positive reinforcement training, we prefer kind equipment only please - no shock, prong, or choke/slip collars - GDR does offer a FREE exchange of these for a nice buckle or martingale limited-slip collar.)

Why: reinvigorating a really awesome group that's been going since 2007 (but a little sluggish in the past year or two), and letting you know about the plan for 2019 events.

We'll start with a very short meeting to cover what Dog Scouts is for new folks, how to begin/renew your membership, and how we plan to get back to being active in 2019 with some fun activities. After that, we'll have some fun informal dog activities like a small agility try-it area and other fun stuff.

We're planning our usual Fall Camping Trip which we do every October, plus looking at a hike or two, a couple of fun training days at GDR, and who knows what other great stuff!

RSVP appreciated (but not required) to Ann at or you can RSVP to our FaceBook Event
GDR Turkey Trot Jog/Walk
Thursday, November 22, 2018
at Spring Meadow Park, Boiling Springs, PA

Good Dog Rising invites you for another super-informal run/walk in the park with dogs. No entry fees, no chip timing, nothing fancy, just friends meeting up for a little outdoors quality time with our dogs prior to the big feast.

All are welcome! Real running skills NOT required. Walkers and runners alike are welcome, and there will be places to shorten the path if you like. Choose your distance: we'll go counter-clockwise around the park - the longer path (keep left) is about a 5k (3.1mi), and if you keep right it circles back to the start on a much shorter path. It would be pretty hard to actually get lost!

Pull into the Spring Meadows park parking lot (Boiling Springs), and look for the bunch of people with dogs. It's easy to find, easy to park, and the course is a nice, easy to follow trail that has some gradual grades but mostly flat. The plan is to start around 9am, so plan to get there a few minutes early.

To make it most fun for humans and dogs alike, we'd prefer kind collars and harnesses (no prongy, chokey, or shockey stuff), and no flexi-leashes please. Spandex pants are at your own risk.

We welcome GDR alumni and non-GDR-alumni alike, so bring a friend! Dogs not required, so if yours isn't super social, you're welcome to come stag!

If it's just a little misty, we'll still walk - if it's pouring out, we'll post on FaceBook if we don't plan to be there, but you can always still go if you're tougher than we are!

AKC Title Testing Day:
Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Advanced CGC, STAR Puppy, and Trick Dog Titles
Saturday, June 24th, 2017    (see times below)
at Good Dog Rising

11am:  STAR Puppy - or - AKC Trick Dog Title
1-3pm: Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
4-5pm: Advanced CGC (Community Canine)

Sign up HERE to reserve your spot! Space is limited.

We do our best to keep testing informal, loose, and fun for both you and your dog!

We'll do testing in small groups throughout the day. Depending on size, we may break into smaller groups and give you a specific start time. Each test is $15. We provide all forms for STAR puppy, CGC, and Advanced CGC.

Not sure if you're ready? Sign up as a practice run!

If you think your dog isn't ready to pass the CGC test, but you'd like to sign up to use your spot for a practice run - you're more than welcome!  If doing a practice run, you may use treats (and coaching tips will be provided.)

Does my dog need to be registered with AKC?

You do not need to be registered with AKC to TAKE any of the tests, however some tests require AKC registration to record the title with the AKC and receive your certificate. For CGC you have options to either just get a certificate (no registration required) or to get the title (registration required). If you want/need to register with AKC, you can send everything in together after you pass! We can answer any questions on test day and set you up with what you need.

All breeds and mixes are welcome to register with AKC (good work, AKC!) - do this under the Canine Partners program with the Canine Partners Application Form. You can send both in at the same time after you pass. This is a one-time registration that covers lots of AKC activities and events.

You may sign up for both CGC and Advanced CGC in the same day. If your dog doesn't pass the CGC test, you may still do the ACGC test as a practice run.

All the details about these tests:

To prepare, be sure to check out details about what's required for each CGC/STAR test here:

Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
STAR Puppy
Advanced CGC (Community Canine)

Find details on the new AKC Trick Dog titles, requirements, and forms here:

What does it really take to pass? You can view the Evaluator Guides!

Sign up HERE to reserve your spot! Space is limited.

Saturday, May 13th, 2017     7-9pm
at Good Dog Rising in our great new location!

We have had such a great time at our previous Yappy Hour Open House events - we think we should make it a regular habit!  We just like hanging out with all of you, and your dogs too.

Join us for light refreshments, unlimited opportunities to talk about your dog, and other fun stuff.  Since this one is our Grand Re-Opening celebration, we're planning on grilling out burgers and hot dogs (we'll make sure to have a few Spicy Black Bean veggie burgers on hand also, which are shockingly delicious.)

As it turns out, we found in the move that we have LOTS OF STUFF. It's good stuff, but wow, lots of it. We'd like to give some of our extra good stuff away to you!

Bring a gift (donation) for local dog & cat rescue Furry Friends Network, and be entered into our prize raffle!  Treats and toys are much appreciated by the doggies and kitties looking for their forever homes. More donations = more entries for prizes!

You can bring your social dog, come stag, or even bring a human friend or two who might like to check out GDR. The more, the merrier!

Yappy Hour - Holiday Edition!
Saturday, December 12, 2016     5-7pm
FREE Event
at Good Dog Rising

Join us to Eat, Drink, and Be Doggy.

December's Yappy Hour will be our holiday party! Whether your dog celebrates Christmas, Hannukah, or Festivus, she is welcome to celebrate with us.

As usual, there will be merry shenanigans, hot spiced wine (homemade gluhwein), and wintery beers. People we know who have amazing cooking skills will bring yummy dishes to share, because they are awesome like that (and because we ply them with alcohol and genuine interest in endless dog talk).

We will try to dream up a new and different, funny way to group-exhange large numbers of $10 gifts bought for random strangers, during which you will not be able to keep Ann's ridiculous made-up rules straight. We promise you will end up with a gift after all the laughing. -- So be on the lookout for $10-ish gift items to bring for the gift exchange.

This is a mostly "for humans" event, but of COURSE your dog is welcome to accompany you. Especially if they like shenanigans.

This is a FREE event - as always, Yappy Hour is our gift to you for being great dog owners - but if you bring a donation for Furry Friends Network, you will be entered in our awesome prize drawing! FFN could really use some high quality (made in USA) treats for the dogs and cats in their care.

RSVP to our FaceBook event, or just show up. We're casual like that.

Kelly Straub, MPT, CCRP is a Certified Canine Rehab Practitioner

GDR Turkey Trot
Thursday, November 26th, 2014      at 9am
at Army Heritage & Education Center Trail

Not a formal race...  Just bring your dog for a little jog with the GDR Canicross group on Thanksgiving morning. We'll meet at the Army Heritage & Education Center trails at 9am and start a few minutes after. Plan to get there a few minutes early, and look for the bunch of people with dogs - that will be where the start is.

VERY informal! No T shirt, no official anything. No one's going to hand you a fancy gel packet midway, but there's also no fee to enter! Just show up and run together (and bring a prize for the prize swap - see below). We are thinking something around 3 miles, still to be determined. Everyone is welcome - so a combination of walking/running some is fine, just come and have fun. (Believe me, if you are not a world-class runner, you will be in good company.)

PRIZES: We would like to do a sort of "Yankee Swap" prize exchange. Bring a prize of any kind around $10-20 in value, not wrapped (dog stuff, food, wine, beer, running gear, homemade pumpkin pie, the gift card you got from your mom and never used...anything. Don't let a lack of gift prevent you from joining us!) We will gawk over the possibilities beforehand for motivation. When you cross the finish line, you get to pick your prize from whatever is left in the pile!

If anyone would prefer not to run, and instead volunteer to be our prize pile guard, and maybe even call out finish times for people, that would be awesome.

RSVP to our FaceBook event, or just show up.

There will be area available for crating if you would like to practice this in between your runs.

$10 for as many runs as fit into the alotted time. We will extend the total time if the group is larger than a normal class size.

Please let us know if you would like to practice Level 2 or 3 signs, and we can include those for you.

Depending on how many dogs register, dogs may be split into small compatible groups ahead of time, and we'll give you a more specific start time for your group.
